Transgender Day of Remembrance 2019

This year is the 21st TDoR. In that time, we’ve seen trans issues receive more coverage than ever before – not all of it positive.

We’ve seen trans rights improve greatly around the world, but still not enough, not everywhere. Whilst Transgender Day of Remembrance is intended as an event to remember our dead, for me, it’s also a day to reflect on the challenges we’ve overcome and the challenges still facing us in different parts of the world.

In 1999, the law in Britain didn’t allow for recognition of me as a woman, and the law here and elsewhere still doesn’t recognise non-binary genders.

Furthermore, as a white trans woman I have privilege trans people of colour still don’t have. As such, TDoR is a reminder to not become complacent and to keep working towards equality and equity for all trans people.
